Kareri Lake Trek: in Himachal Pradesh! Kareri is a small glacial high altitude lake that lies in the Dhauladhar range of the mighty Himalayas. Its surface is 2,934 meters above sea level. The melting snow from the Dhauladhar range serves as the source of the lake. Water visibility is very high because of the fresh melting snow and the lake is shallow. Kareri Lake is best known for trekking in the Dhauladhar ranges.

Kareri Lake Trek is a wonderful trek that takes you through lush sub-tropical pine forests. The forests are filled with Chir and Chilgoza pines. You will come across several gushing streams and passes through lush green meadows, wild and colorful orchards and thick forests that are home to numerous Himalayan Birds and animal species. One of the major attractions of the trek is the Lord Shiva Temple on a hilltop overlooking the lake. And moreover, you will also see some gaddi kothis and cattle grazing grounds.

The Trek originates from Mcleodganj and leads to Kareri Village. This long trek of 27 km- one side is covered in 3 days. From Kareri Village the trail steep ascends towards the Kareri Lake. It starts with forests of pine and broadleaf, and slowly transitions into grasslands, with patches of deodars and pine.
During the trek, you will pass by small hamlets and villages. Also, you need to cross the Kareri Nallah several times over a wooden bridge, which can make the journey more adventurous.
After reaching the Kareri Lake you will see the lake is all surrounded by high-altitude grasslands, beautiful landscapes of the Dhauladhars, tranquil environment and clean air. Breathe some fresh air, spend some time near the lake and click beautiful pictures. Then, moving back the trek will descend to the Kareri Village and spend your night watching stars. Camping will add charm to your place. Further, the trek will go to Kareri village to Ghera and then to Mcleodganj.
The area around the lake also serves as a basecamp to Minkani Pass and Lam Dal, a lake on the other side of Minkani Pass.

Spring Time is counted as the best time to visit Kareri Lake if you wish to see flora and fauna of the area in full bloom. The lake remains frozen in the months of December to March. Monsoon time is not the right time to visit as the trail gets slippery and muddy which increases the risk of mishappening. In summers, the weather remains pleasant and chilly. All seasons are best to visit totally depends on the choice of trekkers.

The Kareri Lake trek is a moderate trek and preferred to experience trekkers. You can get a chance to camp in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. Living in tents and sleeping bags will give you experience on how to stay or survive in snow or chilly weather. The nearest airport is the Gaggal airport, which is 13 km away from Dharamshala. You can take a taxi or take a local bus to reach Dharamshala.

If you have a couple of days more then you can also do the Beas Kund Trek. The starting point of the trek is Solang, which is a one hour drive from Manali. Beas Kund is a wonderful trek and give you amazing scenic views of the Himalayas. Moreover, you get to stand right at the base of the Pir Panjal range.

Pundrik Lake is another trek that you can do in a weekend. Pundrik Lake is a hidden treasure in Himachal Pradesh surrounded by thick pine and fir forests. It is also a paradise for bird watchers.
